On January 9, 2010 AR Plovnick (Andy & Zeus, Lead Stones, etc.) and FORMA, were invited by Concord Ballet Orchestra Players to perform as support acts at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. At the time, I wasn't playing out very often and I was sort of oblivious to the vast music scene happening around me, so I jumped at the opportunity to play. I made visuals for all three acts to use (my dvd player got pretty funky during CBOP, leading to some interesting repetitions), loaded my girlfriend's car up with some synths and my space echo, and drove on down to Gowanus. My curiosity was piqued when I saw FORMA's array of synthesizers, drum machines, and monochords, and needless to say I was very impressed with what they did with them. We kept in touch after the show (I even had my 29th birthday party at their home/studio/loft, The Schoolhouse), played a few more shows together, and eventually I got Mark (who performs solo as ODO) into my studio for an off-the-cuff jam. I wasn't great about keeping accurate studio logs at the time, but I think this recording was made some time in August or September of 2010. We tracked it live to tape and pretty much immediately forgot about it. Well I recently found the tape and it sounds pretty cool, and he thought it was cool, so here we all are. It 'officially' comes out on March 6th, as a free download or on tape (program repeats on both sides), but for now you can stream it (or download it right away if you pre-order the tape). If you're in the Brooklyn area, it'll also be available at CO-OP 87 (along with all of our other physical releases) so pick it up there if you don't dig mailorder.

Summer is winding down, and everyone at EGS is keeping busy. In addition to the previously posted EPs from Double Entendre and Dolph Rundgren (AKA AR Plovnick), we also have a new EP from Zachary Wilson (Andy & Zeus). Don't Panic was recorded by Zack at home during breaks from performing/rehearsing/recording with Andy & Zeus, between March and August of 2011. While some of the tones and textures might sound familiar to fans of A&Z, the clarity of the mix sets it apart from the "mind-mush" normally associated with that group. These 4 songs are a good blend of "astral club musick" and drones 'n' tones, nicely showcasing Zack's strengths as composer/producer/performer. Three new tunes and one unreleased nugget from the past make up this new digital EP from AR Plovnick (Andy & Zeus/Lead Stones), released as Dolph Rundgren. Drum machines, electronic pianos, guitars, synthesizers, and aux percussion intermingle with a healthy dose of Space Echo to create a pretty sort of melancholic pop. The first three tracks were recorded this year on 16-track tape at EGS HQ, and though each song occupies a different place in the multiverse, they vibe well together. The closing track is culled from an as-yet unreleased "Progressive Hardcore" concept EP titled AR Plovnick/Isolation, which may explain the slightly more sinister vibe. Recorded on 8-track tape at the old EGS HQ in 2009, it serves well as a closer to this collection. Available as a free digital download at bandcamp.

Hurricane Irene didn't destroy New York City when she rolled through at the end of August, but she did manage to keep most of us in or homes for a weekend. While that may seem like a drag to some of you, it turned out to be a good thing for EGS partner Ryan Daniels AKA Double Entendre. You see, Ryan's studio is set up in his apartment and he got right to work making and manipulating 5 second tape loops into full-bore songs. The resulting EP, aptly titled Irene, is a hypnotic slice of electro-acoustic magick. Hear it for yourself below, then head over to his bandcamp and buy it for a measly $2.

Universal Monster Series, from Worcester, MA played grim stoney riff-metal in the vein of High on Fire/Sleep, Black Sabbath, et al. Mike Guercio (later of Healing Feeling) was the drummer, along with Jesse Tully (guitar, vocals) and "Deuce" (bass). I lived with Mike's brother Paul (LA Drugs, Life Partners) from 2001 until 2003 or 2004 or something, and he introduced us. Brains in Danger and UMS started booking a lot of shows together around New England, and me and Mike jammed informally a few times (including one time when Adam Watt was in town, sowing the seeds for the later formation of HF). Mike now plays in a progressive metal group called MAAR, and ~~I'll releasing a limited edition cassette of their EP with some exclusive tweaks in January, so keep an eye out for that.~~

Here's a 4-pack of tunes that Zack from Andy & Zeus made in early 2004, shortly after moving back to his home state of Maine from Boston (where I had first met/known him). The death of a laptop in 2006 erased most of his recordings from that period, but he had these songs safely burned onto a CD-r. There are some pretty cool sounds spread across these tracks, with artists like King Crimson, Suicide, Ariel Pink, and even Black Flag popping up in my head while I was listening to this. Zack says he was also "starting to dip my toes into the Detroit techno classics" at the time. It's pretty raw and it kinda sounds like it could have come out now. Which I suppose is why I'm putting it out now.

Chances are probably pretty good that you've already heard of Ryan Daniels/Double Entendre via Friendship Bracelet or Altered Zones or something. Or maybe you've heard of him because he has played, both live and on recordings, with Andy & Zeus. Or maybe you've never heard of him. In any event, this 'mysterious' fella is in fact a good friend of mine, and I was honored when he asked me if it was okay to release his EP under the EGS banner. There's not too much to say about this release that hasn't already been said.. it's lush, chill, and ethereal. In other words: right up my alley. Ryan is selling this release on his bandcamp page, so head on over (link below) and buy it. And now that Ryan is officially part of the EGS family, it probably won't be too long before I get him into Electrick Gypsyland to work on new material. To tide you over until then, here's some footage of the one and only show our short lived band, The Wakefuls, played together. Kind of a departure from what most of us are doing now, but enjoyable just the same (I hope).

Das Münz! helped to conceptualize, shoot, and edit it (in addition to appearing in the video), and the other supporting roles are played by our good friends Scot Oxholm and Wassaic. Shot on Hi-8 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. No promoters were hurt in the making of this video. Enjoy!

FYA was probably the last band I was in that would be considered "hardcore," and was definitely the last band I sang in. Formed within a year or two of Outlast's dissolution by Chris Raymond (at the time also playing with Down But Not Out and formerly in Outlast with me), DFJ (of Mind Eraser, Mental, every HC band in Boston, I think), and myself as an outlet to explore Infest-inspired HC. Listening to the demo now it seems like we missed the mark, though we probably came a bit closer with our MKII lineup. The original lineup recorded this demo (with Chris playing both bass and guitar parts) with the guy from Japanese Torture Comedy Hour in a barn in Central Massachusetts somewhere (Littleton maybe?). We played a couple shows in CT but we were never a really serious band and we eventually drifted apart. A couple years later DFJ and I reactivated the band with Zac Davis (FFG, Hassan i Sabbah, Lambsbread) and Zack Wilson (AN, Chas. Mtn, Andy & Zeus) on guitars, and Rob Burnett playing bass. We played a lot of shows (including a micro-tour with Think I Care, and the last 97a show) but we never recorded. Which is too bad, because this is the era most people seem to remember. The original demo included a 'dub' taunting Chris Morgado, but we left it off the MKII reissue. Pat Whittle had the MKII demo, so that's what you're getting. If anybody has the original demo, or knows how to get in touch with Chris Raymond, drop me a line!

Outlast - Demo 1997

EGS008: Outlast Demo 1997

Outlast was the first hardcore band that I was in. As I remember it, we stayed up practically all night before our first show (at the Rat, in Boston) making these demo tapes. Everything was done on a 4 track and the guitars were plugged straight in with no amps or anything. Pretty raw. One of the guitar players (I won't say who) wasn't present at the session, so the other one played both parts. My bandmates went on to be in FYA (coming soon), Squaw, The Trust/Down But Not Out, Suicide Nation, Chas. Mtn, Gary War, and probably some other projects. I don't remember much about that first show except that Hands Tied were supposed to play, but didn't show up. Luckily, Pat Whittle did show and he bought one of our tapes. And he kept it. And a couple weeks ago he came over to my apartment and we plugged a walkman into my computer and ripped it. Not much else to say about this, I'll let it speak for itself.

The future is here, and its pretty cool. I'd like to start showcasing and releasing more projects that I like, but may not have as much (if anything) to do with me, so don't be afraid to send stuff to me if we've never met. The second release from Andy & Zeus is here. And once again we have CDs and MP3s. With tighter structures, stronger melodies, and more textural variety, I like to think these three songs show a vast improvement over the first single. Sung melodies intermingle with guitar/synth harmonies over a radioactive pulse, then a dark stranger shows up and the party gets a little weird. The last song, Here We All Are is a tribute to both Baba Rama Dass and Steve Hillage, and features guest vocals from Mieke Van Halsema of Wassaic.

If you read the last post, and/or downloaded the BID demo, you should have a pretty good idea of where we were coming from. We played a LOT of shows in Boston/New England (and once, MAYBE twice, in NYC) and actually developed a little bit of a fanbase. All of these live commitments sorta crippled my songwriting abilities, but somehow we managed to get by playing more-or-less the same set of songs for a while. Eventually the decision was made to do a new, better recording. This time we decided to stay comfortable, and we recorded the bulk of the Memories of the Future EP live in our practice space, with Richard from 1986 working the laptop. Lead guitar (HA!) and synthesizer overdubs were done at Richard's house in Brighton. Then he moved to Somerville and did the mixing and mastering. In my opinion it sounds great. Two of these songs were 'new' (Atlantis was actually the first song I wrote for BID and a version exists on that DFJ demo..) and two of them were remakes from the demo. Memories of the Future is my favorite song that I wrote with BID, and I think it foreshadows my work with Healing Feeling nicely. Okay, I don't know what the fuck I just wrote..looks like I might be starting to take this blog a little too seriously :) Anyways, I think it was while we were making this EP that I decided to move to Brooklyn, and we played our last show (with Universal Monster Series, Shark & Bear, and Permanent Damage) before we had a chance to release it.

Another long post here, please bear with me! Brains in Danger was the first serious band that I played guitar with. The band was formed in late March of 2002 in order to play a show at the Berwick Institute in Boston, MA that Chris Strunk was setting up that coincided with my 21st birthday that year. The original lineup featured Seth Olanksy on drums, A.R. Plovnick playing Seth's Wayne's World II edition Stratocaster, and DFJ on Bass. We played 3 REALLY loud instrumental-psych jams featuring a weird mix of breakbeat drumming and echo-heavy feedback guitar on a bill featuring some local hardcore bands and IO from Pittsburgh (sorry I forgot the lineup! If you remember, leave a comment!!). Our second show was a week or two later with more local hardcore bands as well as Ampere & Das Oath. After that we recorded a demo to 1/2" 8 track tape in a nameless loft in Providence, RI. I still have the 1/2" tape, but I don't know the current whereabouts of the cassette tape master, so that demo will have to wait for another posting. Anyways, shortly after that, Justin left the band to focus on his drumming with about a billion different hardcore bands (I remember showing up to practice at his house one time just as the dudes from Mental were leaving haha).
Seth and I decided to carry on with the band, and his friend Steve Lord joined on the bass. This would prove to be the 'classic' lineup, and we moved into a practice space in Allston, MA. At some point, Karen Tsiakals joined to play synthesizer, but this lineup never really gelled and after a couple gigs she moved on to form UV Protection and we were back to the trio lineup. This lineup would head into Studio B @ AI New England/Masscomm to record a demo as a project for one of my classes. This was my first project behind the board of anything bigger than 4 tracks, and it proved to be a challenge trying to engineer and perform, but with the help of my great friend Ed 'Butch' Galka, we managed to get it done. Included as a bonus track in this download is a FANTASTIC remix of 'The Drifter" done by Brendan 'B-Side' Long (of Ryker Vs. Bear) fame.

I've got a long story today, but it's worth the read, I promise! On the first gorgeous day of the spring of 2003, I went for a walk around Chandler Pond in Brighton, MA with my girlfriend at the time. On our way back to Foster Terrace, we passed a house with a cardboard box on the curb with FREE STUFF written on the side in permanent marker. My curiousity got the better of me, and I decided to take a peak inside. The first thing I saw was a factory-sealed cassette tape of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's greatest hits compilation, So Far. I never could figure out why somebody would have that tape and not open it, but I was happy to take it. But this was not the greatest treasure in the box...there was also a cassette tape and two CDs featuring the music of a mysterious cat named Burl Dushkin. Well, I have a soft spot for found letters/art/etc, so I was pretty excited about listening to some found music. And the music was good! The cassette was comprised of three instrumental songs. According to the scribbles on the J-card, ol' Burl played all the instruments (electric guitar, drum machine program, and an impressive array of now-vintage analog synthesizers) and it was recorded at his home studio in Arlington, MA in the fall of 1982. Although there were song titles and credits scribbled on the insert, there was no cover art. Maybe it was a demo intended for record labels, but I can't find any information online. The first CD was labeled 'A Light Interruption E.P.' but otherwise also lacking in artwork. These four songs were recorded in Arlington during 1987, it seems by this time Dushkin had abandoned the guitars altogether in favor of digital keyboards and sound effects. It's all sequenced as one track and this stuff is A LOT weirder than the tape, but some of it is pretty accessible, and overall the quality of the production seems to have increased since he made the tape in '82. The final CD only has one song on it, and its pretty much more of the same as the Light Interruption EP...digital synths, programmed drums, stereo effects and more weirdness. Although this doesnt appear to be an official release (the credits were handwritten again), this one finally had some artwork (which I reused for the cover of this compiltion). Recorded in 1989, it seems Dushkin had moved to Newton by this point (which may explain why I found the box in Brighton) but otherwise it was business as usual. Ironically, I grew up in Newton and I was probably playing with Go-Bots nearby while this song was being recorded. While it's not surprising that Burl never found any mainstream success, I am a little bit perplexed that I cannot find ANY information about him beyond what was in the box. Burl -- if you're out there, please get in touch!

Healing Feeling formed in the summer of 2006 with six members and broke up in the summer of 2007 with four members. We made this demo in Boston and I think we made 100 copies or so. Features the classics of our set at the time pretty much. Members went on to play with D.B.C.R., Maar, Naam, Set & Setting, and others. Heavy instrumentals with a bit of synth experimentation thrown in for good measure.

It's kinda funny to have bonus tracks for a demo but Adam found a rehearsal tape of the songs from the demo plus a couple unreleased tunes and the sound quality doesn't totally suck and the performances kinda smoke, so we used a little scribble that Mike made for a cover. Dig it.

EGS001: A.R. Plovnick - Stuck Behind a Bus (summer tour promo 2008)

In the summer of 2008, I booked a few weekend getaways around the east coast to play some music. Not wanting to go out empty-handed (and still waiting for my DVD to be released on Insect Fields), I decided to put together a little promo cd-r to hand out. The cover was drawn by my good friend Zazz, inspired partly by my live show, and partly from an experience we shared together. Female Finger also appears on the DVD (and below), the other two songs are exclusive to this release. While cleaning my room the other day, I found that I still have a few copies left.
